The Poem by Raul Cordero
The Poem by Raul Cordero is an immersive public art installation located in the heart of Times Square, New York City. The installation is a 20-foot tower covered in a cascade of mountain laurel that houses an illuminated poem inside. The poem is visible from the inside, inviting passersby to pause and reflect from April – May 2022.
Set within a sculptural tower where the exterior is covered in a vibrant greenery of mountain laurel, the poem’s illuminated text is on the inside, and displayed on the walls in a way that creates a sense of movement and depth. The Poem is set within the tower and becomes visible when you enter, providing a space for visitors to take a moment to take in the illuminated poem inside the tower. The Poem juxtaposes with the landscaped exterior, creating a unique and immersive experience in the middle of Times Square.
This exhibit brings an unexpected splash of green foliage into Times Square from the outside, with the inside being reflective of its surrounding with lights that spell out a poem –
calm silence rolls,
deftly through so much clamor,
roar echo un heard
And here is a video to get a look and feel of what it was like to visit this Exhibit. You can see Minnie Mouse enjoying a stroll through it as well!
The landscaped structure manages to narrow the sensory overload of Times Square to a concentrated line of vision within the bright lights and hustle and bustle of Times Square.
