El Dorado – The New Forty Niners by Cecile Chong

El Dorado – The New Forty Niners

El Dorado – The New Forty Niners is a public art installation by Cecile Chong. Making its way through the five boroughs of New York City since 2017, the installation pays tribute to the 49% of NYC households that speak a language other than English. Each year, the installation is displayed in a different borough, promoting ideas of transformation, immigration, and community. I had a chance to view it at Dag Hammarskjöld Plaza, near the United Nations Headquarters in Manhattan, in June 2022.
