Big Dreams Bloom Here: Macy’s 2023 Flower Show

The Macy’s 2023 Flower Show is one of my favorite events to herald in spring in New York City at the Macy’s Herald Square flagship store, pun entirely intended!  Celebrating its 48th year in 2023, this annual flower show has transformed Macy’s store in midtown Manhattan into a floral wonderland with flowers all over its main floor and balcony featuring DIOR.  With a different theme every year, this year’s show titled Big Dreams Bloom Here features fluffy clouds, rainbows, and a whole display of florals to celebrate DIOR at the at the mezzanine level.

I had a chance to visit this show on the day that it opened, and as expected it offered a multitude of Instagram worthy picture opportunities all over the Broadway side of the store on the ground level.

History of Macy’s Flower Show

The Macy’s Flower Show, an annual event that takes place in Macy’s Herald Square flagship store in New York City, first started in 1946 as an Easter Flower Show. The show was created by Robert K. Straus, the President of Macy’s, to bring color and life to the store after the long, gray winter months.

Over the years, the show has evolved to start featuring themed displays in the 1970s such as The World of Balloons and The World of Toys. In the 1980s, there were actually live animals, such as butterflies and birds, in the displays. Each year, the show has a different theme that is built into all the floral displays.

Some of the past themes of the Macy’s Flower Show that I have seen include Floral Display of Fortitude in 2021, Journey to Paradisios in 2019, and Once Upon a Springtime in 2018. The 2023 show is called Big Dreams Bloom Here.

As a personal observation, I have noticed the number of flowers at the annual flower show go down every year, though the displays continue to be eye catching and spectacular all the same, and definitely worth a visit year after year.

2023 Macy’s Flower Show

The much-awaited 2023 Macy’s Flower Show called Big Dreams Bloom Here features a fluffy clouds and floral landscapes that transport visitors to a magical world of flowers and imagination.  I loved the playful, whimsical displays with giant flowers and floral sheep suspended in mid air.

Inspired by the beauty and wonder of nature, the show showcases a wide variety of flowers, including tulips, hyacinths, daffodils, and many others artfully arranged in stunning displays that feature rainbows and giant flowers.

On the outside, the Macy’s windows were absolutely stunning and included the winning design from a competition featuring Fashion Institute of Technology Students.

In addition to the stunning floral displays, the 2023 Macy’s Flower Show also has a floral garden at the balcony level sponsored by DIOR.  DIOR fragrances are artistically featured in between overflowing flower displays reflecting the fragrances that are featured, along with a guided experience by DIOR to discover the different floral landscapes and displays.

Macy’s is also offering daily tours to learn more about the Flower Show’s history, design and flowers. These tours are free and depart every 20 minutes from the store’s W. 35th St. & Broadway entrance from store opening till 1pm.

In 2023, the Macy’s Flower Show runs from Sunday, March 26 through Monday, April 10, 2023, and is free and open to the public during store hours. It is a family friendly event where the main floor, balcony, and windows of the world-famous Macy’s Herald Square flagship store are kicking off the celebrations for spring in NYC.  If you plan to visit, check the Macy’s Flower Show website for a full schedule of events and activities, as well as any updates or changes to the festival’s programming.

Flower Arrangements and Installations

The Macy’s Flower Show always features at two or three primary displays that set the tone for the show, along with smaller installations and arrangements that transform the entire cosmetics and fragrances section into an urban garden.

As you walk into the Herald Square show from the Broadway entrance, there is a centerpiece that features giant flower sculptures that are set between a sea of flowers. It was tough to get a clear picture of these with everyone that was taking photographs there! In some ways it was reminiscent of the giant flowers that Kusama had at the New York Botanical Garden a couple of years ago.

Walking down the aisles, there were a number of cloud installations suspended from the ceiling that were full of flowers.

Along the way there were giant flower benches that were very popular photo ops, as was a giant rainbow featuring flowers at either end.

My favorite were these floral sheep that were suspended in mid air along a couple of escalators.

At the other end of the store, there was a giant sculpture resembling the sun that had a line of people waiting to get photographs.

And I can’t possibly forget these We Love NYC floral displays that were in a couple of different places in the store.

Walking up to the balcony that featured Scents of the Season by DIOR, I stepped into an absolutely stunning fragrance garden that was just overflowing with flowers. These featured three displays that fragrances aligned with – Rose Harvest for Miss Dior, Jasmine Harvest for J’adore, and Lavender Harvest for Sauvage. There were a ton of sales associates there to answer questions, and stations set up to enhance the DIOR experience.
