Project 562

Shining a Light on Native America

I love public art that expands my horizons, such as the Project 562 exhibit that is on in Times Square these days.

I discovered that Project 562 is the documentation of a decade long journey by Matika Wilbur, who is from the Swinomish and Tulalip Tribes. Matika has visited members of over 300 sovereign nations throughout 40 states, from Tlingits in Alaska to the Pimas in Arizona, Pomos in California to Wampanoags on Cape Cod, and photographed more than 562 federally-recognized tribes in the US.

Project 562’s collection of pictures is a reflection of the richness, diversity, and lived experiences of Native America, some of which are being exhibited in Times Square.

It is amazing to see this project being celebrated in Times Square, and sad to see that graffiti vandals have already found a way to vandalize the exhibit.
