New York Quotes

Quotes about New York are a dime a dozen, and any online search yields many many results for these. Some of these hit home more than others as a New Yorker, and in this post I would like to share the New York experiences that come to mind when I read some of these often repeated quotable quotes about the City (otherwise called Manhattan).

As in all my posts, I have taken these pictures over the years.

My Favorite New York Sayings

“But there is one thing about it—once you have lived in New York and it has become your home, no place else is good enough.” John Steinbeck

I couldn’t agree more! I have truly come into my own in New York, and this is home now.

“The city seen from the Queensboro Bridge is always the city seen for the first time, in its first wild promise of all the mystery and the beauty in the world.”  F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby

Seeing the New York skyline after coming back from a trip always makes me feel like I am driving into Manhattan for the first time, it is a sight that never gets old, full of promise for the days ahead.

“There’s nothing you can’t do. Now you’re in New York. These streets will make you feel brand new. Big lights will inspire you. Hear it for New York, New York, New York.” – Alicia Keys, Empire State of Mind

There truly is nothing you can’t do in New York! This song by Alicia Keys is well known and widely heard, but it is special to hear Alicia Keys sing it in New York, with Jay-Z as a surprise guest!

“It comes down to reality, And its fine with me cause I’ve let it slide. Don’t care if its Chinatown or up on Riverside. I don’t have any reasons, I’ve left them all behind. I’m in  a New York State of Mind.” Billy Joel, New York State of Mind

I grew up listening to this song in India, and knew the words by heart before I moved to NYC. There’s something magical hearing it sung live at Madison Square Garden by Billy Joel all the same, especially when the song is reflective of all that I now feel about New York too!

“I would give the greatest sunset in the world for one sight of New York’s skyline. The shapes and the thought that made them. The sky over New York and the will of man made visible.” Ayn Rand, The Fountainhead

I never forget what a privilege it is to live in Manhattan, where I am fortunate to be living my version of the American dream!

“There is something in the New York air that makes sleep useless.” Simone de Beauvoir

This is just so true! New York is buzzing all time of day and especially at night, and there is always something to keep one’s senses buzzing if you so choose.
