Fleet Week in New York
Fleet Week is an annual event in New York, when ships, sailors and marines descend on the five boroughs of New York. 2022 was an in person event after a 2 year break, and the streets were once again full of men and women of the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard visible out and about in crisp uniforms from 25th – 31st May in 2022.
I didn’t get a chance to attend any of the events or the tours of the ships as I was away for Memorial Day, but here are a couple of pictures I took of the ships along the pier –
Times Square is always full of people in uniform during Fleet Week, and they are happy to be photographed, and to join the festiviites –
There was also a dive tank in Times Square, though the diving was over by the time I visited –
My all time favorite sailor in Times Square was around in 2015, when the iconic photograph of a sailor kissing a nurse taken in Times Square to celebrate the end of World War II was recreated with a 25 foot sculpture that was on display as a Public Art project –
While walking along the piers today, I did miss all the water sports that happen in the shadow of the Intrepid in the summer, especially the Stand Up Paddle Board Yoga that is always fascinating –
