Close Encounters of the Theatrical Kind
Last week I was invited to the opening night of MCC Theater’s new off Broadway show, Which Way to the Stage, by one of their Board Members, who happens to be one of my closest friends. And yes, I was friends with him long before he became a Board Member!
I had no idea of what to expect from the show going in, and found it it to be one of the funniest and cleverest shows I have seen in a long time! Loved the inside jokes about Broadway shows, people and friendships, so many of of which I can draw parallels to in my life. And the casting was spot on.
There was a reception after the show which was nice, but what truly made my evening was accidentally becoming part of the after party at the wine bar across the street from the theater, Ardesia. My friends and I already had plans to go there after the reception, and didn’t think much of it when the cast and management of MCC Theater started to trickle in. Soon after, the corner they were sitting in erupted with live singing, and we were treated to old and familiar Broadway songs all evening!
Here they are singing Don’t Rain on my Parade from Funny Girl
Here is Defying Gravity from Wicked
And here they are singing the opening number from Little Shop of Horrors
And this ended up being another one of those nights that makes New York truly magical for me.
